Several months back, I agreed to participate in a chamber-of-commerce-sponsored business and industry tour for high school students. I was asked to speak about blogging to the students who chose the “creative” career path option, which is ironic because I have never been paid to blog.
True, blogging got me a job in journalism. But even journalism doesn’t pay all that much.
I don’t remember exactly what I spoke about, but I do recall showing the touring students some data on journalist salaries and saying at least once something like “you’d better be prepared to live with your parents or some roommates when you are starting out.”
Today, a related commentary and some links from a blogger I follow, Laura McKenna at Apt. 11d.: Advice For Young Journalists.
