Community College Dean
Age: 56

Having a child at the age of 44 did definitely have some role to play. Maybe being a dean was a better foundation for my daughter growing up than being a warden-slash-deputy-commissioner. You really have to be able to go in in the middle of the night at a moment’s notice and deal with horrible situations that somebody like me would probably carry home with them. You don’t just see stabbings and have babies born in prison and see people killed and . . . it was bad stuff going on there. When you’re a single person, you can come home and go for a run and process that or talk to your friend about it, but when you have to go home and be a parent – I don’t know how people shake that stuff off so easily. Or maybe it’s easier to shake it off because you have a distraction that’s quite lovely.
